LACHLAN HAMILTON

At only 26, Lachlan Hamilton is establishing himself not only as a multifaceted musician, but also as an educator.

Having studied jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Lachlan has already seen much of the world by making music. This includes performing at the 2004 Montreaux Jazz Festival and the 2004 North Sea Jazz Festival with The Australian All Star Big Band, comprised of young musicians from around the country.

Opting to reside in Sydney for the time being, Lachlan has played with respected and established bands such as John Morrison’s Swing City Big Band and The Ed Wilson Big Band at venues including Taronga Zoo and The Basement.

Lachlan has studied with some of Sydney’s finest jazz musicians, including Dale Barlow, Col Loughnan, Dave Theak, Andrew Robertson and Adrian Cunningham, as well as British saxophonists Stan Sulzmann and Julian Siegal. Through his tertiary study, Lachlan has also studied under highly respected jazz luminaries such as Craig Scott, Judy Bailey, Steve Brian, Bill Motzing and Matt McMahon.

Of course, jazz isn’t the only setting in which you’ll hear Lachlan. Whether you’re soaking up the nostalgia of a retro covers band, singing along to a Blues Brothers tribute show, or dancing the night away to a Ministry of Sound track, you’re likely to come across Lachlan’s music sooner or later.

Performance isn’t the only avenue Lachlan is pursuing. Arranging and producing music is the newest venture he is exploring. Be it turning Mary Poppins’ “Chim Chim Cheree” into an Afro Cuban instrumental, or stripping back Stevie Wonder’s “Superwoman” to its raw elements, Lachlan has a insatiable appetite to arrange and produce music in such a way that brings a new flavour to each tune, whilst still respecting the intent of the composer.

Education is also an integral part of his career. Most notably, Lachlan has tutored at the IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) Jazz Camp and the NSW Department of Education and Training State Music Camps.
